so 2011, here we are

Well hello there 2011, you’re not looking so bad.

2010 wasn’t too bad either. But what is it about the start of the new that just gives one so much optimism? I used to refuse to make New Year’s resolutions. I used to say that if I wanted something to change, then I shouldn’t wait until the New Year…I should just do it now. Or…I would wait until my birthday, which does fall relatively close to the New Year. It made sense to make my resolutions then. That way it’s not so much a new year, but a new year for me. What do I want to accomplish in my (insert age here) year? I think I first did this at 25, which seemed like a good year to make some changes.

Anyway, this year I’m giving January 1 a shot for some new resolutions. I’ve got some literary slanted resolutions.

The first would be to write more, which as a writer, this is one resolution that may never go away. I could write every waking moment and probably still want to write more…maybe in my sleep? But this also includes getting more work done on my screenplay. It’s a fun change of pace, even if it’s one I’m still not too familiar with.

And the second is to read more. I’ve been keeping track of the books I’ve read for each of the last few years, and I didn’t do too poorly last year. But this year I’d like to read (or reread) some classics. I’ve decided that once I cut down on my to-read pile, I will reread Anna Karenina, and I’d like to revisit A Tale of Two Cities. But I’d like to read Oliver Twist and finally give Moby Dick a read.

Any other classics I should have on my radar? Or any books you’d like to try to read this year? What are some of your resolutions (maybe I’ll get more ideas)?

Happy New Year!
