Leap Year 2012

Leap year has become just another day. I guess there is still a sense of relaxation, if that makes sense. It’s a bonus day that allows you one more day to get something done that maybe had not been taken into account. But when I was younger there seemed to be more…mystique with the extra day. You know?

In school there was one guy I knew who’s birthday was February 29, and we thought it was so cool. Of course I did always wonder what day they celebrated the other three years (February 28 or March 1? Maybe at midnight between the two?) and of course as one gets older having a real birthday every four years does not slow down the aging process. Though as kids we used to note how cool it would be if it did. And while everyone else was maybe 10 or so, he was only 2. Technically, of course.

Of course, that was not such a great way of aging when everyone was 16. Maybe then was when the birthdays switched to February 28 or March 1.

Sadly I don’t think the weather is going to cooperate today. It would have been lovely to have a warm, sunny extra day to really make it feel like something special. Maybe a trip out to an ice cream truck in the middle of the afternoon again. But I’ll still enjoy the extra day. If anything, it’s an extra day to get some writing done.

But weather aside, make this leap day special, regain that mystique. After all, it only comes around once every four years (like…the Olympics or the World Cup, and everyone knows what a party those events are). Enjoy your Leap Day!
