David Garrett

I wish I knew how to play the violin. Orchestra started a year before band at my school, and I debated on trying it out for a year, but at the time I had my heart set on the flute. So I waited a year. I did have a friend who once taught me a few things on the violin, but that was…a really long time ago.

The first time I heard a violin that sang so incredibly beautiful was seeing Joshua Bell performing at the Kennedy Center during a special Tchaikovsky night. If I say that it was breathtaking, will that make me seem like a nerd? Yeah, probably. But I’m okay with that.

And recently I’ve come across another great violinist: David Garrett. I’d been listening to him for a bit, but just finally got his Rock Symphonies for a Christmas present. Beethoven to the violin? Sure. But Nirvana? Aerosmith? Led Zepplin? No? Too bad. Because it’s a brilliant rendition. I could try to describe it in words, but I think I’ll let the violinist do it himself.
