November and novel writings

It occurred to me the other day that November will be here before I know it. Yes, there are still two more months and some change before then, but these last few months have just flown by. But for you writers out there, you know that November means National Novel Writing Month.

And see? I’m not the only one on countdown mode. According to their website, 71 days until NaNoWriMo 2011 begins!

I’m already really excited about it this year too. The last two years I worked on a series and didn’t really have “new” novels that I wanted to work on. But that’s changed. Within the last few weeks I’ve had a couple of kernels of ideas that I’d love to get started working on. But I’m saving those ideas for November. I’ve written down some of these ideas (no, have not started writing the actual novel!), and I guess I’ll see which one I think is stronger and can carry me through a month. At least I have some time to outline.

It just means that I can’t get started working on them right now. Which is a good thing since I have some revisions that I should be working on. But I love the excitement of starting a new project and being introduced to these new characters and their lives.

So anyone else planning to participate this year? Any ideas that you’re excited to flesh out come November?

  1. I can’t wait to see what November brings!

    • Can’t wait to see what November brings either! Hoping it’ll be a good month, and I’m thinking already it will be. Looking forward mostly to the holiday season and more baking.

  2. Hi! I got to your blog by googling NaNoWriMo and DC. My boyfriend and I–we met through NaNo last year–just moved up here in August, and it’s cool to hear about others doing it around here. What’s your story going to be about this year? Do you plan to go to any write-ins?

I’ve put your blog into my feed. Looking forward to reading more! 😀

  3. I’m not quite sure which story I’m going to work on this year. I have a couple of ideas that I’ve saved for NaNoWriMo. Now I just have to decide which one! I’ll definitely blog about the experience and how the idea’s going (once it’s picked). I’ve done write-ins with friends, but haven’t been to any in DC through the site. Every year I plan on it, so I’ll check out the schedules.

Good luck if you’re participating this year!

  4. Hi Patricia,
I was going to do nanowrimo – but now I’ve decided to come to DC instead in November. Only it occurs to me, why not do both? I’ll be travelling alone and my novel is going to be set in DC, so why not? Would love to meet up with fellow nanowrimos while I’m over (likely the first week of November)… Are there places where they tend to gather, bookshops and cafes that are nano friendly etc? (as close to the political action as possible!)
I wanted to “follow” youg blog but couldn’t figure out how? Probably being very stupid!

    • Hey Claire,

You can definitely do both! There are a lot of places where writers will meet for writeins or just getting together in the DC area. I’d suggest joining one (or more) of the geographic forums on the nanowrimo site. There’s one for DC and another for the Northern Virginia area, and I think Maryland too. In the past they’ve listed the details there on the site for writeins. There are usually a couple of each week, if I recall correctly from last year.

If you have a twitter account, you can follow me there. I’ll usually post updates to the blog there too. And good luck in November! I’m really looking forward to November 1.
